New original score performed live by Robbie Fulks and Danny Barnes!

Wednesday May 17th 8:00pm

Just in time for Mother's Day weekend, the criminally underseen slapstick gem starring Harry Langdon, with a brand new score performed live by Americana music mavericks Robbie Fulks and Danny Barnes. In TRAMP, TRAMP, TRAMP, poor Harry makes one last desperate attempt to save his father's failing bootmaking business by entering a cross-country footrace. The only things standing between Harry and the $25,000 prize (not to mention the young and gorgeous Joan Crawford) are his infantile outlook on life, a ridiculously un-buffed physique, a chain gang, and a cyclone. When TRAMP, TRAMP, TRAMP was released in 1926, the film's success rocketed him into heady critical comparisons with Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, and Charlie Chaplin.

"The fourth genius of screen comedy. Langdon's character stared at the world like a startled white mouse. He was a completely individual comedian and a brilliant pantomimist." Kevin Brownlow

Multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter Danny Barnes was the driving force behind the genre-hopping band Bad Livers. Recently he has released several critically-acclaimed albums, including GET MYSELF TOGETHER and DIRT ON THE ANGEL. In his solo work and with such bands as Thee Old Codgers and MyLab, he has collaborated with such artists as Wayne Horvitz, Bill Frisell, Robin Holcomb, Robert Earl Keen and Tim O'Brien.

Robbie Fulks is known for his elegant, sophisticated songwriting, masterful crooning and flatpick guitar wizardry. An iconic and beloved figure in the alt-country scene, Fulks has released seven critically-acclaimed albums including GEORGIA HARD, which made many of last year's top ten country music lists.

Fulks and Barnes will be joined by Mike Stone on percussion and Sprout on viola.

F*ck
93 minutes • 2005 • USA • In English • Unrated

FridayApr 2110:00 PM

The origin and uses of the English language’s favorite curse word, featuring enthusiastic purveyors such as comedian Billy Connolly, rapper/actor Ice T and filmmaker Kevin Smith, mixed in with folks like Miss Manners, Ron Jeremy, Pat Boone and Hunter S. Thompson. A film that, in the wrong hands, could have been a f*cking mess is given visual zip with animation (from Bill Plympton) and creative use of some amazingly funny historic footage. But it’s the calvacade of great interviews that carries the film and helps it find its voice. With theories of origin (most of which are proven wrong), a clever guide to proper usage and, finally, some real insight into the political power of words, this film is guaranteed to offend some and leave others chortling in their seats. Homemade Hillbilly Jam
80 minutes • 2005 • Germany/ USA • In English & German • Unrated

SaturdayApr 2210:00 PM

Set against the magnificent landscape of the Missouri Ozarks, Rick Minnich’s film follows one beautiful day in the life of Big Smith, a band that creates music true to its roots — and always brings the house down. In Homemade, these neo–hillbillies guide us musically through their rich cultural legacy. We see them mixing old–time religion with hippie stylings as they play at family gatherings and spontaneous jam sessions. Minnich depicts religion, family and the Ozarks in the least hokey way imaginable, offering a portrait of the devout that’s authentic and convincing. Best of all, Homemade introduces us to Mark Bilyieu, Big Smith’s unpretentious, rootsy and soon to be legendary singer–songwriter.

(PS) Tickets for the movie & concert combo available for $12 (concert tickets are $8).

In person: Big Smith’s Mark & Jody Bilyeu.

Holy Modal Rounders...Bound to Lose
87 minutes • 2005 • USA • In English • Unrated

SundayApr 231:00 PM

A tale of musical passion, collaborative spirit, and missed opportunities as seen through an outlandish group who married early psychedelia with American roots music and somehow lasted 40 years. What a long, strange trip it’s been… When fiddler Peter Stampfel teamed up with guitarist Steve Weber in the early ‘60s, the two eccentric musicians didn’t know they were setting out on a four–decade musical adventure. Dubbing themselves the Holy Modal Rounders, the two shared a fascination with both American roots music and early psychedelia. This film does more than chronicle an obscure band — filmmakers Sam Douglas and Paul Lovelace have created an engaging, revealing portrait of musical passion, collaborative spirit, missed opportunities and the fickleness of life. With appearances by Dennis Hopper, John Sebastian, Peter Tork of the Monkees, music editor Robert Christgau of The Village Voice and playwright (and former Rounders drummer) Sam Shepard, Bound to Lose is a must–see no matter what your musical persuasion. (KC) In person: directors Paul Lovelace and Sam Douglas, and star Peter Stampfel.

Favela Rising
80 minutes • 2005 • BRAZIL • In Portuguese with Subtitles • Unrated

SundayApr 234:00 PM

The favelas of Brazil are brutal places — 600 slums with views and built into the steep mountains surrounding Rio’s beaches. Jobs are rare; corrupt policemen routinely escalate the violence; and children, ensnared by warring drug cartels, die in epidemic numbers. Favela Rising tells a story of hope and change within one favela, where, after a police massacre, Anderson Sa resolves to find a way to end the violence and resurrect his town. Sa and his friends start a band, AfroReggae, and stand up to the gang leaders through their message of community and peace. Their success sparks the Afro–Brazilian movement, and soon music and dance classes give youth an outlet and foster community solidarity. Winner of the director’s award at Tribeca, Favela Rising tells an inspiring story of change against all odds, one person and one song at a time. (ST)
