The third Sunday of each month at noon, we'll meet up at the Nightlight Lounge to watch the flick, enjoy some drinks, and discuss these adaptations of books to movies. Sunday February 18, 2:00pm, FREE! The Constant Gardner written by John le Carré, directed by Fernando Meirelles Justin Quayle, a British diplomat in Nairobi, hears that his wife, Tessa, was killed while driving with her doctor friend to Lake Turkana. Investigating on his own, he discovers that her rape and murder, apparently the work of roadside bandits, may have had more sinister roots. Sunday March 18th, 2:00 pm, FREE! Touching the Void written by Joe Simpson, directed by Kevin Macdonald Touching the Void is the true story of Joe Simpson's and Simon Yates' disastrous and near fatal attempt to climb the 6,344 meter (20,813 foot) Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. AND COMING IN APRIL... Three very different books, three very different films, all directed by Curtis Hanson Sunday April 15, 2:00 pm, FREE! Wonder Boys Written by Michael Chabon/Directed by Curtis Hanson Grady Tripp is a professor/writer living in Pittsburgh who is struggling with writer's block. Whilst doing this, he also manages to get the chancellor pregnant. In the meantime, he and a college student, James Leer are trying to find a rare jacket once owned by Marilyn Monroe, and a college girl, Hannah Green boarding with Grady has a bit of a crush on him. Its mayhem, its fun, and Michael Douglas is a gem in this one. Sunday May 20, 2:00 pm, FREE! LA Confidential Written by James Ellroy/Directed by Curtis Hanson 1950's Los Angeles is the seedy backdrop for this intricate noir-ish tale of police corruption and Hollywood sleaze. Three very different cops are all after the truth, each in their own style: Ed Exley, the golden boy of the police force, willing to do almost anything to get ahead, except sell out; Bud White, ready to break the rules to seek justice, but barely able to keep his raging violence under control; and Jack Vincennes, always looking for celebrity and a quick buck until his conscience drives him to join Exley and White down the one-way path to find the truth behind the dark world of L.A. crime. Sunday June 17, 2:00 pm, FREE! In Her Shoes Written by Jennifer Weiner/Directed by Curtis Hanson IN HER SHOES is the alternately hilarious and heart-rending story of two sisters with nothing in common but size 8 feet. Maggie and Rose Feller are both best friends and polar opposites when it comes to values, goals and personal style. If you already have these books, pull them off your shelf and start readin.
